I created Literate Lives as a place for readers, writers, parents, students, and teachers to come for inspiration and practical strategies for nurturing a literate lifestyle both at school and in the home. As an avid reader and writer, I believe strongly in the power of literacy for enriching the here and now, as well as building a better future.
Who am I and what qualifies me for this mission?
First, I am a reader. Books are where I turn for solace, entertainment, wisdom, and information. I read a range of genres from fantasy, to historical, to mystery, to non fiction, and enjoy adult, teen, and middle grade novels. Sharing books with my family and friends is one of my great pleasures.
Second, I am a writer who seeks to entertain and inspire readers to wonder, marvel, and pursue their dreams. I retell folktales, a number of which have been published in Cricket magazine. I have written a historical-fantasy novel and a middle grade fantasy-adventure novel. I am currently at work on anther fantasy novel and a middle grade fantasy novel in verse, and am engaged in that most challenging of endeavors–the Great Agent Hunt.
I am a member of SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) and two critique groups. In addition I am a member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and have served on our Oregon region’s Ad-Com committee.
Third, I am an English/Language Arts and Creative Writing teacher. I have a bachelor’s degree in English from U.C. Berkeley, and a Master of the Art of Teaching from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. I am licensed to teach all grade levels from 3rd grade through high school with an endorsement for English/Language Arts. I taught for over a decade and never ceased to be delighted when a student moved from being intimated by being asked to write, to feeling confident in his or her own skills.
I’ve raised and read nightly to my own three children, served as a school site librarian, volunteer librarian, and volunteer kids library program coordinator, and even taught preschool.
Reading and writing are what I love to do, and through Literate Lives, I hope to support you in nurturing your own reading/writing lifestyle, as well as that of your students or your kids.
